Site Guidelines Please read the following rules and guidelines very carefully. By registering you agree to these guidelines and must obey them at all times. Refusal to obey these guidelines will result in the appropriate responsive actions.

Please understand that we are not attempting to censor any messages or opinions posted, but do remember the forums are moderated. We simply want to maintain an open, interactive discussion without offending participants. NZMAS Admins and Moderators reserve the right to edit/remove inappropriate messages, or to lock a discussion thread. Before taking any of these actions, a moderator will attempt to steer the discussion back on topic, if possible and appropriate. The additional step of editing or deleting a post will only be taken in appropriate circumstances; again, the intent is not to censor legitimate discussion or to change the meaning of any post. If we edit a post and you do not like the changes please feel free to notify us and we will delete your post.

Examples of posts that may be edited or deleted include posts containing profanity, chain letter and other spam postings, posts that personally insult or reveal private information about another community member. Other examples are discussed in the guidelines below.

In general, we require all posts to be polite, constructive and on topic. Most importantly stay respectful of others. Remember that this is a public site read by many people of all ages, race and religious background. Always bear this in mind when posting. Note that some categories have a "Rules and/or Guidelines" announcement post at the top, these contain further rules specific to that category (eg: Private and Commercial Sales sections) Please ensure you read and abide by these rules also.

Some things to keep in mind when posting:

Respect: Respect comes first and foremost. Respect the guidelines for forum and site usage. Respect NZMAS, its volunteers, yourself, fellow community members and guests on this forum. If you are an experienced reef hobbyist, have both respect and patience for beginners. Dont forget when you are learning, there is no such thing as a stupid question!

Language: Foul Language and obscene images will not be tolerated. This site is family friendly, and all posts and posters must respect the integrity of the site.

Personal Attacks: Personal attacks and "flaming" will not be tolerated. If you want to praise or criticise, make it constructive. To help in your post, try providing examples as to why it is good or bad. If you believe you are being personally attacked, do not retaliate! PM a moderator first.

Personal Information: Under no circumstances is personal information about others to be posted (name, email, phone, address etc) You may however, post personal information about yourself at your own discretion. When referring to other members always do so by their NZMAS username, not their personal name unless they have signed their post with their name. You may post contact information about a business only if that information is publicly available via the Telecom whitepages While we respect that everyone has their own opinion, you are not permitted to post any information about a company if the intent is to do them disservice in anyway (also see personal attacks) By signing up as a member, NZMAS reserves the right to disclose your email address if we deem it necessary to resolve a dispute or conflict (however we will never disclose your information for marketing/spam or statistical purposes)

Sock Puppet accounts: Sock puppet accounts are disallowed. A sock puppet is an account made on an Internet message board by a person who already has an account, for the purpose of posting anonymously. Use your own account for posting personal opinions. Posts from known sock puppet accounts will be deleted and both the puppet and actual account may be banned from using the services of NZMAS.

Stay on topic: Responses to a particular thread should be on-topic and pertain to the discussion at hand. Users should use the "New Topic" button to start a new discussion which would otherwise be off-topic in the current thread. Threads that are off topic may be closed by the moderator.

Posting Messages: Posting the same message to many topics or boards is considered spam. Duplicate messages will be deleted or consolidated by NZMAS Moderators. Please do your best to post new topics to the appropriate category, moderators will move topics that are posted inappropriately. Any messages you post will stay available to the public for as long as this discussion board is online. Please post carefully, once you have posted your message is here to stay. We will not edit the content you wrote unless it does not conform to these guidelines. If we edit a post and you do not like the changes, we will delete the message at your request.

Product Pushing: Posting to simply solicit or push a product is not permitted; specifically where there maybe a conflict of interest with another party. An exception to this are members that post under a username registered as a legitimate business name and are either an importer, wholesaler or retailer related to the marine and reef keeping hobby are permitted to advertise their product(s) or service(s) so long as the supply of that product or service is made available for sale to other members of this forum by legitimate means without discretion of any kind (for all intents and purposes "User Reviews" are not defined as product pushing) and that product or service is posted under the Commercial section. There is a fine line between pushing a product and simply having a positive opinion or recommending one. It is at the descretion of moderators to lock a thread or remove a post if they deem it inappropriate; please respect their decision. If you need to link to a product, do so only to the official manufacturers web page NOT a business that sells that product (that includes businesses on trademe) If in doubt, please PM a moderator first. Please also read the rules at the top of the private and commercial sections before posting items for sale or in response to wanted to buy questions

Private Discussions: Sometimes, a discussion thread strays off into a friendly dialogue or a heated debate among a very small number of users. For these exchanges, use the "Private Messages" (PM) feature that is provided through the link near the top of this site or the chatroom. Public forum posts should be reserved for matters of interest to the general marine community.

Copyright material: If quoting information from other sites, please enclose it using the "Quote" button and provide reference to that site where possible. If copyrighted material or otherwise illegal material has been posted, please notify NZMAS so that it may be removed.

Complaints: If you have an issue with a specific post/topic on this board, please send a PM to NZMAS or the Moderator in charge of that category. We will review the post and edit/delete if necessary.

Signatures: Please keep your signatures (accessed via your "profile") brief. If you must use an image, ensure that the total of all images does not exceed 30Kb. Large signatures and images effect load time of every thread you have posted on. Personal signatures must also remain neutral - in other words you may NOT advertise your company either via signature or avatar. Only commercial user accounts are permitted to advertise or promote their own company via signature, so long as it is kept brief and to the point. Commercial user accounts are entitled and encouraged to use their company logo in place of their avatar for easier identification to other members.
