I want something similar to that blue frame that you have in the shop, but more like a cabinet with marine ply for the sides and bottom, what are the dimensions on that?

I'm looking at around 65x65cm and 80cm ht

$200 including materials? Materials alone will be in the $100-$150 range once you get timber, plywood, paint, primer, handles, etc.

For that budget you are looking at second hand or DIY honestly.

My tank stand is 1.2m x 0.5m x 0.8m and cost me around $200 just for DIY with about 10-15 hours of my own time, and I didn't even use marine ply (triple the cost than untreated).

With a smaller stand the actual work won't be much less (just less painting) but a skilled craftsman could probably do it in half the time, so at the VERY least 5-8 hours ($150-$240 at $30/hr, pay any less and likely to spend twice as long making it!), very likely will take longer. Most time consuming part is getting a nice paint finish (sand, prime, sand, coat, sand, coat bare minimum).

Your best bet is trying to find some old godger who has nothing but time on his hands and is willing to work well for cheap. A decent craftsman is looking at $400+.

Or buy a premade unit or something second hand which roughly suits your size requirements.

I was actually thinking along the lines of just the cabinet itself (timber frame and plywood), I can do the waterproofing and painting myself

I was asking because I had no idea about woodworks in NZ, not trying to be stingy or anything like that, just an honest question. Apologies if the said budget somehow offended you but there's no need to be rude.

OK well I still think your best bet is DIY.

You can follow this guide: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=1169964

You can get all wood cut to exact dimensions at Bunnings/Mitre10, if you trust them (I don't, they've cut wrong for me in the past). Try to find someone who looks good. You will also need a drill.

Otherwise raw materials + labour might be $300 if you're really lucky with no painting. Look in your local paper/buy sell exchange/supermarket for any ads for craftsmen. Ask to see what they've done previously.

Thanks guys, I might actually go this route. I didn't know that Mitre10 cut raw materials according to specified dimensions, and that's awesome since I there's a Mitre10 branch just a few blocks from me :yay:

zubbz ygpm
